Just need some feedback from the members of this forum, if you don't mind and have a few minutes to post some.

Firstly, what are your views on the current post limit required to have links in your signature? Is it too much, too little or just perfect?

Secondly, what are your views on the current Forum Rules? Are they too strict, too lenient or just fine?

Thanks for anyone that leaves feedback here.

I think they are mostly good, except for some of the links issues.

Why ban link shorteners? I want to hear an argument for this before I say why it's bad.

Would you use the "no promoting other hosts" rule on people who mention that they like how another host does things, or that they've had good experiences with them, etc in a discussion? (AKA not really advertising, just commentary)

Referral links aren't all bad. If you're not aware of how dropbox does them, the receiver and the poster each receive 250mb more space in their dropbox. Why should this be banned?

Foul language... just delete that rule. I can understand removing posts describing the goatse in immaculate detail, but the word "****", for example, is known by every elementary school kid on the planet.

How do you determine if somebody is selling signature space?

Okay that's about all the commentary I have. I look forward to your response. Keep up the good work!

People can use link shortening URLs to have people visit websites which can attack a persons computer. It's happened to me before multiple times.

Commentary is fine, but mostly people just come in here to advertise other web hosts for the sole purpose of just advertising them and trying to steal clients from us.

Alot of webmaster niche forums disallow referral links, since trying to force people to signup under you is disrespectful and a pain in the butt to copy paste the URL to cut off the referral link stuff.

This is a family friendly environment, hence the foul language rule.

A google search can determine if people are selling signature spaces here.

For most of that, I agree.

For the URL shorteners... well... they're very useful, especially something like bit.ly where you can track how many clicks you get. I'd recommend just banning the user that abuses them. I love them and use them in many places... I'd be shocked if I got an angry message because of it. It seems "anti-user" to ban them.

Ah I can understand the problem on the niche forums. Fair enough. I love sharing dropbox referral links because that service is freakin' awesome! I also understand that some trolls abuse the referral links. Whenever I would post a dropbox referral link I would always clearly state that we each get the same benefit (250mb extra space) and that was it. It's a dang good referral system if you ask me.

Lots of foul language is family friendly, it's the overruse that kills it. I suppose it's really just how hardcore you are about the rule that counts. (Yes, please ban gross and disturbing use of the language.)

But yeah, I've seen how you're moderating around here... so far so good. I wanted to do some grilling since you had asked for it. Smiley

Cheers!

I think the rules are pretty much the norm.  I have a closed forum full of cops and things can get a little blue in language, if you know what I mean....people are warned of this when joining.  Obviously, we don't allow children on our site.
I also agree with not allowing links to other sites.  There are too many spammers out there and there is always the ability to message the staff and ask them if you can post a certain site with a reason.

I just wanted to tell you that you did a great job with the massive influx, yesterday!

Thanks! I spent nearly 8 hours watching that topic to make sure that it didn't spiral completely out of control.

And here I am again keeping an eye on it.

dWhite - message received. But, and I'm really not trying to be a jerk, I'm am just trying to understand your definition of on-topic. If we are allowed to only post a direct response to the events of yesterday, most people will only have one good post in them. After that if the conversation is not allowed to branch out into broader issues of why, the government, conspiracy theories, etc., it's going to become boring and pointless. I agree anything like this can easily break down into shouting matches and personal insults that are also a pain. But for the most part I didn't think it quite got there. Close maybe.

You have a thankless job and I wouldn't want to do it. But maybe it's just that you want this thread to just to die off quickly. Thanks for what you do and have a good day.

I tried my best to get rid of posts that really had no value, such as the posts about the US Womens Hockey Team, and posts that only contained "good" "thanks" "great post" type of deals and those sorts that held no relevance to incident.

I agree with you on the part where it was getting close, however I'd prefer to stop it before it starts. This way it wouldn't get out of control and I wouldn't be able to stop it.

It's like a fire, if a fire starts and you don't stop it, it spreads and goes out of control and it becomes even harder to put it out.

And also this is a webmaster forum, and we have a reputation to maintain as a reputable webmaster forum which could be easily destroyed if webmaster people come on here and see all the bickering and flaming.

I still stand by my actions, and while some people may not disagree with it, I did it with the best of intentions.

I had people complaining about all the useless posts in there they had to search through to get to the real discussions, and when I acted on it people started complaining about it.

I am taking time out of MY life in order to keep this topic going in a controlled state.
