Login problems
« on: October 23, 2009, 04:27:59 AM »
Last night, around 11:30 pm, I couldn't access my file manager. I had been transferring my site from Geocities to t35 when I no longer had access to the t35 site. I waited till after midnight and was then allowed back into the site.

Tonight I have been attempting to login in to the file manager from around 11:30pm till 1:24am with the following results:

"An error has occured:
Unable to connect to FTP server ftp.t35.com on port 21."
(there's more but I can't post it due to size restrictions)

I have most of my site transferred to t35 now. Have I done something wrong?

There was a DDOS attack during the night that might have made things load a little slow. This was resolved as of ~5am EST. The attack didn't start until 1:30am though, so I am not sure if your issue is related. How big is the file you are trying to upload?

1:30am Eastern would be 10:30pm Pacific (As you well know), so it's very possible that was the problem

The files I'm uploading are the html type. Most run from 3 - 12 kb. I'm cutting and pasting as fast as I can to meet the yahooligan deadline. I have about 58 html files left. The pictures and graphics (all gif and jpeg type) are being stored on my computer until I can convert them for use here on t35.

Before going to bed this morning (Approx 4:00am Pacific) I was able to log in and  move one page. I logged in again about an hour (?) ago and began the process again. I was able to load 5 or 6 pages before the system froze up and kicked me out again. More of the same?

You should know that (baring this glitch) your t35 site has been a Godsend for me. I really appreciate having a place to go with my site. I really like the intuitive portion of the site. The one where if you've entered incorrect html, it refuses to save it. I can't tell you how many hours were spent at geocities searching for errant html! Those were the early days for me. I obviously missed one page which your system caught. I really, really like that!

You don't have to panic, Geocities isn't being shut down for another few days. :)

Oh I'm well aware that I have until the 26th. I just want to get this thing done!

I have close to 60 pages left to move. That doesn't count associated gifs and jpegs. Once it's all moved I'll need to go page by page and re-reference all the a ref stuff to reflect the move.

I've been moving for about a week now. Several days ago I griped to my wife that this is time intensive. She replied with a question (don't they all): "How long have you been building your site?" Well the answer is since early 1997. I've added to it every year since then.

It eventually go so large that I started another page to link to for the content. I built the page for myself. As a geocities community leader I had to have a page. You know how it goes, you build a page and you're happy with it for about two hours. Then you see something you just need to add. One thing leads to another and you've page upon page of html. At this point it's a living breathing thing all on it's own!  :p

I can log in again.. Just so you know.

I can remember the early days at geocities. The system would crash and no one knew what was wrong. It got so bad the geo eventually dedicated a page for outages. If there were a problem they'd post it and we'd go do something else till it was fixed.

Back then they had problems with the hardware. Today you have more problems with hacking jerks who have no life!

I'm not frustrated at all. When the down time comes I move on to something else. I want to stress that I'm very happy with your site!

I've managed to get everything moved now. All the html that is. Now comes the re-write to reflect the new address. As well as all the uploads so the site works as programmed, again.

My wife is chomping at the bit to move her site now. She, like me, had decided to let it go. Now that I've found a fairly easy site to work with, she has the itch to move too.
