Gimp versus Photoshop?
« on: November 29, 2008, 03:09:51 PM »
I'm a newbie when it comes to graphic design, though I've been wanting to experiment with a graphics program to see if I could make a template for my own website.  It has a very nice one made by a friend currently, but I wanted to blend some images into it to make it a bit more pleasing to the eye.

^-  My website.

Now, I don't have too much money to spend on a program like Photoshop, even though I know it's said to be the best in the market for graphics editing.  I was wondering if anyone had any experience with GIMP, which is free, and if it might be able to do the job I want it to do?

GIMP is pretty much a free version of Photoshop.

GIMP and Photoshop are both great for what you want to do: blending images, creating gradients, and other things of that nature. Photoshop, hence the name, is meant for working with photos and other raster images.

If you are interested in creating logos, you'll want Illustrator or Inkscape. (Inkscape is to Illustrator as GIMP is to Photoshop.) GIMP's support for text editing and drawing shapes is rather limited, so you'll need Inkscape for that.

I normally use Fireworks which is very similar to Photoshop as both products are from the same company. I prefer Fireworks as this software seems to be a lot easier to use then Adobe Photoshop.

I generally use Photoshop, I have a lot of actions that can be used for creating 3d text and ecovers etc.

I suppose its what you have forced yourself to learn, to learn another just seems pointless.

I have to say I do prefer the layout and feel of Fireworks, but I myself use photoshop elements. It is not too pricey and allows you to do pretty much everything you need it to do.

I use both for different things. I use GIMP more for animated items and ps2 for non-animated.

i prefer GIMP. It is free, and that's what I look for. It seems no different to me than photoshop, just the fact it's free

I guess the best one is the one you are most familiar with and that would be photoshop for me as that's what I learnt in college. All of them should be able to produce most of the results from image editing, but in a different way.

Both GIMP and Photoshop are good editors but I think windows user may find it easier to use Photoshop since it is more user friendly when it comes to interface. As for me I prefer photoshop as well since I'm more familiar with it and I've been using it since version 7.

I would go with Photoshop. GIMP IS free, but in the end it doesnt have the full power and potential as Photoshop.

I guess the best ace is the one you are almost companion with and that would be photoshop for Maine as that's what I discovered in body. All of them should be able to develop most of the consequences from image deleting, but in a unlike manner.

In my view the greatest one is the one you are most recognizable with and that would be Photoshop for me as that's what I learnt in college. All of them should be able to produce most of the results from image editing, but in a diverse way.

GIMP is free graphics editing software. It doesn’t help fully in designing a website. Moreover, designers can easily work on Photoshop for every designing aspect.
