The actual question i wanted an answer to: is it possible to make folders inside folders (IMAP).
if yes then how (using Thunderbird)
if no then why

I have personally never used imap, so I'm not sure if the technology itself permits it, but I don't see why it wouldn't be possible. We don't have anything installed that would stop it.

As for the permissions, if you have a forum account, it should let you search.

There is something definately fishy going on with the search.  Even I, a moderator ( smiley), get the "You are not allowed to search for posts in this forum" message.

I searched around a bit (not on this forum of course), and couldn't really find anything specific about it. But i thought maybe this might have something to do with it.

Strange... we will be upgrading the forum any day now, so that might fix the issue. I also know in the past we have had abuse and hacking attempts via the functionality of the search, so it was dissabled for that reason --- i just thought we re-enabled it. I'll check it out.
