Bandwidth Limit exceeded
« on: December 23, 2008, 07:10:21 PM »
I am trying to figure out exactly how I got this "bandwidth exceeded" error when I have uploaded nothing? I am checking my CPanel and see nothing that explains what or how this could have possibly happened. Can someone explain this to me?

"Bandwidth" doesn't necessarily involve uploading, it typically involves traffic to your website or downloading of your website content. In cpanel, you can go to your state counters and see exactly what is driving the traffic.

John, I just double checked everything to make sure and all the numbers are correct. You have used over 20gb of BW this month. For the detail you can look under awstats, or click "bandwidth" under the logs menu in cpanel. Also keep in mind that we recently upgraded BW limits on all accounts, and your account used to be limited to just 8gb, and is now 20gb (which is A LOT of bandwidth). I recommend you dig deeper into your stats to find out what's using all that bandwidth up.

Well I've looked over these stats, which make little sense to me. I'm showing the bandwidth was used up by 21,337 page hits and my Modules.php file (which connects the PHP files for the various functions of PHPNuke setup from your Fantastico). Nothing was changed in these setups (short of adding news stories) to the nuke front page. Thats about it. Nothing else anywhere was changed. So from the change where we had 8 gigs a month and never used it up to exceeding 20 gigs with no changes to the pages or other files. I dont see how this is possible and these stats dont explain it to me at all.

Is there a way to find out specifically what is using it up?

Bandwidth usage doesn't increase by a file changing, it increases by more visitors going to the file. From a quick glance at the logs, you had a HUGE increase in requests to the Modules.php file. I am not sure what you mean by "what specifically is using it up." Your bandwidth is being used by an increase in traffic. The more people that load a 1mb file, the more bandwidth that gets used.

10 people load 1mb page = 10mb BW.
100 people load 1mb page = 100mb BW.

Bandwidth is used as a synonymous to refer to :
• DATA TRANSFER: is the amount of data actually transferred, between a computer and the internet. It is often measured in MB or GB.
A bandwidth limit exceed related to data transfer, can be compare to prepaid cellphone minutes, when you run out of minutes your cell phone would stop working, the same with your site, when you reach your data transfer "monthly" limit or the total amount of data that your visitors can view/download from the site, the access to your site wont work.

• SPEED TRANSFER: or bandwidth is the amount of data that can be transferred in a fixed amount of time, often measured in Mbps.
A Hosting Services Provider sells access plans based on speed, limiting bandwidth according to each plan. Plans with higher bandwidth limits are more expensive, but faster.
A bandwidth limit exceed related to speed transfer can be compare to a highway and its lanes. Each plan has a fixed amount of lanes assigned. If you have more cars or visitors than lanes then you have exceeded your speed or bandwidth capacity

A Bandwidth Limit Exceeded normally occurs when you have a low bandwidth limit (data or speed transfer) and a popular site. Solution: Increase your bandwidth.
