T35 Hosting Support / Free Hosting General Support / A quick question about streaming
|
on: February 21, 2005, 02:05:25 PM

I don't think the free service supports streaming media but I may be wrong. I am just wondering how you were able to do mp3 with a file size limit of 250kb. Must be short clips. There are however a few free providers that allow for streaming media but from what I've seen you must remain active in their forums to get hosting. Not too many free services are going to have what you are looking for when it comes to that. You could always get a t35 paid account and I'm sure you could do whatever you desire Of course you will need a domain name. godaddy.com is a good place to start for that. For under $7 and a $5 a month for hosting you can do all sorts of things as long as it's legal. (IE: no warez, hack, or illegal MP3s)

T35 Hosting Support / Paid Hosting General Support / Alex: Is this allowed??

Thanks! This may be a project I will work on this summer. What I'm thinking to minimize security issues and abusers is to manually create the database upon payment or request and monitor activity on the sites registered. And since I'll be charging a fee then perhaps not too many will sign up that would abuse this service. I want to find software other than PHPMyAdmin so that I can just let users modify their database and not have access to other users. I don't know if such software even exists. If not I may scratch the idea all together. Thanks again for the reply

T35 Hosting Support / Free Hosting General Support / How can I install vBulletin forum on T35 ?

Then you will be able to install virtually almost any forum, and not to mention you get unlimited mysql and better uptime and no ads. That's the best choice I forgot to mention that you could always use a remotely hosted board. There seems to be some really nice ones out there these past couple of years but yeah, paying is always the best option. $5.00 isn't gonna break anyone and domain names are so inexpensive now. I just registered three .biz and one .us name for a client for under $30 total cost. Go to godaddy.com to register a doman. They seem to have the best prices and features of a registar.

You may want to use an alternative forum. Go to hotscripts.com and just search for flatfile forums.
A few to try: SimpleBBS NaVBoard PBLang Ultimate PHP Board
I've tested all of these with the free service and they all seem to work pretty well. However, PHP is run in safe mode on t35's free service so some features may not work on Ultimate and PBLang. I personally prefer SimpleBBS over Navboard but that's just me.

I was thinking of starting a service of offering mysql databases to those in need but I wanted to know if it is allowed even on paid service. It wouldn't be exactly free but far less than signing up for a paid provider. I was thinking around $20 yearly. If this isn't allowed them that's fine. It was just a thought
Thanks, Jimmy

I also found another way around the no mysql issue. Sign up for another free host that does provide a database and use it for your php scripts running on t35. I've tried it out and it works pretty well. I'd still use t35 for hosting my site though. You can't beat the other options they offer over other servers. Do a search on google for free php hosts and you shouldn't have any problem finding one. Just put up a couple of "filler" pages on their service though...just use their DB for whatever lol....just a little cheat I use sometimes. I'm not going to mention any free php host names...just look for them. I don't want to take away from what is offered here.
Just remember to replace "localhost" with "freeservername.com" (or whatever the actual server name is) when you set up your script. Works really well with phpbb, Xoops, Vbulletin, mybulletin, Mercuryboard and IPB...these are the ones I've actually tested this with

T35 Hosting Support / Free Hosting General Support / Virus in ads?
|
on: February 19, 2005, 02:13:45 PM

Just to pass time, I sometimes browse other members free pages on t35 and have had numerous ads come up but not once has it been reported as a virus on my system. I seriously don't think that t35 would associate with advertisers that would try to do harm or impose unwanted data on to your computer. Check the cookies of the other sites you have vistied. Just because something comes up at the time you are browsing a website doesn't mean it came from the website you are now on. You may want to check to see what file sharing apps you are running too. Programs such as Kazaa or Edonkey use adware to support their products and often downloads *.dll or *.exe files to your system which are read as a virus. I am assuming you are using MS Internet Explorer for browsing the net. Download Mozilla Suite or Mozilla Firefox and give it a try. IE is full of security holes and easily hijacked, making you more vunerable to unwanted things on your computer. I personally use Mozilla 1.7.5 and have had no trouble what so ever with viruses, spyware or adware from visiting websites for the last five years after I switched soley to using Mozilla. Before that I used Netscape and early versions of other browsers since 1993...well before Internet Explorer reared it's ugly head Hope this helps Jimmy

Very nice, was finally able to delete a couple of old accounts. Cool!!! Would be nice if you could install some flatfile scripts...if it can be done.

I intend to make a textured background but haven't gotten around to it yet. Just making a "rough draft" so to speak. Thanks for the replies, I really appreciate it since this is just a personal site for myself I decided not to go with style sheets or flash. Just good ol' graphic work and tables...basically the hard way around.
Thanks, Jimmy
