1  General / Website Reviews / Let's say you were going to buy a women's football shirt on: May 27, 2008, 03:18:10 PM
If you were going to buy a women's football shirt, which of these 2 links would you buy from:

This one: http://womenplayfootball.com/shirts/catalog/

or

This one: http://womenplayfootball.com

Please tell me which of the 2 you would pic and why you picked it.  Hopefully your input will help me decide which one to keep up

Okay... we just filled our 16th order tonight.  Almost all the traffic is coming from myspace.  I created http://www.womenplayfootball.com/news.html which gives the news for women's football teams and leagues.  This should serve as some content.  We're getting more hits, and our bounce rate is about 30%.  So stats are picking up for this 2 month old site.  It's looking up.

Do you feel that the content has to be on the index or no?
3  General / Website Reviews / Women's football shirt website on: February 22, 2008, 12:39:59 PM
Site up for review:  http://www.womenplayfootball.com

Alright, here's google analytics' breakdown of the site:
358 Visits
1,427 Pageviews
3.99 Pages/Visit
38.83% Bounce Rate
00:03:51 Avg. Time on Site
80.73% % New Visits

Here's the site owner's breakdown of the site:
2 sales

I am requesting that anyone/everyone give me reasons, ideas, excuses as to (speculative or otherwise):
1.  why this site is not receiving any more traffic than what it is
2.  why this site has not made any more sales than what it has

I am here requesting a review of the site because I am trying to figure out if there is anything other than the simple laws of supply and demand that are affecting this site's performance.

Keep in mind that I am a freelance web designer, and I should know the answer to the question presented...   however, I am at a loss on this particular website.

I have taken into account that:
1.  The product has a limited target (only so many women play tackle football)
2.  The site is fairly new (established in January 2008)
3.  The site does not have a PR (as far as I know there has been no PR since Jan 08)
4.  My submissions to multiple directories probably have not been processed yet, therefore I have few backlinks

Steps I have taken for SEO:
1.  Posted multiple blogs
2.  Commented on relative blogs and linked www.womenplayfootball.com
3.  Submitted to multiple directories (all free, none paid)
4.  Optimized all meta tags

I have used social networks such as myspace to drive traffic to the site.  I have added friends who are on women's football teams, in leagues, friends of people on teams, and in the leagues, which is where MANY of the hits are coming from....   Many of the friends have backlinks to womenplayfootball on their myspace page.

So, the review that I am asking for is a basic overall review on the design layout, functionality, user input, SEO suggestions....

While I doubt I make major changes to the overall layout of the site, any and all suggestions for tweaking this site will be seriously considered.

Also, is there some secret to getting a site listed in dmoz?  I submitted this site and have had NO luck getting it listed!

I know I have a lot of questions, and am asking you to look at a lot.... but the owner has a lot of questions for me that I have not really been able to answer.....  Sad

Fire away.

Welcome to the first website that sells women's football shirts. Our shirts are designed for women football players by women football players.

I am not the owner of the site, but I designed the site....  I want this site to do very well.  It would be really nice to see it take off....

Do you think I should have a note explaining that the store link will take them to another secure website?

I guess it will help if you made some kind of note stating that they will be directed to a secure shopping cart or site....

Also, any ideas as to where I can get website quality images for my header? I would really like to jazz it up.

There are sites that you can buy the use of stock images.  You can google "stock images".  Compare prices for the images, sign up, and then buy the images.

My graphic designer friend uses istockphoto.com which I am not endorsing, but am just mentioning for your references.  You can get images for free at morguefile.com which my graphic designer friend also uses.

Both sites offer high quality images that you can use for your website.

If you want a complete overhaul, I can help...  A web designer could do a world of wonder for your site. check out www.geauxwebdesigns.com

ditto everything chickenmeister said.

Also, how about some product or images of something that resembles the service you provide?

When you arrow over the links, they turn yellow.  You just can't see yellow on top of white.  You need a different color for your links.

Why is the layout for http://www.lyonsperformance.com so different from http://www.shop.lyonsperformance.com ??

When you navigate from http://www.lyonsperformance.com  to http://www.shop.lyonsperformance.com, it's like you are completely leaving the ttp://www.lyonsperformance.com site.  People who are unfamiliar with your site (which is presumably EVERYONE) will think that they are leaving your site and going to another site...  which will make them question the security of the site.

Consistency is key, my man.  You have to remain consistent throughout your website.  Don't go changing the layout like that.  Bad move.

Pick a layout & stick with it.  That's why your store isn't doing good.

But, heck, what do I know, I just do websites as a freelance.... check out www.geauxwebdesigns.com

Good luck

If you want to create a page that allows users to upload files to you, here is the solution:

Check out http://www.uccs.edu/~formmail/

If you are familiar with code, you can use his script in your page to send an upload to your email.  You can use this to allow your users to send attachments to your email.

I have used it and it works.....  until the university takes it down.

Good luck.

Keep in mind that you cannot upload large pics.  You might want to look at photobucket or imageshack to host your pics.

Check and see if the files that won't upload are larger than 512kb File Size.  If so, get those files hosted elsewhere then link them up so they load on your page/site.

You might want to check out something like filezilla to upload your files, then you can see what is on the remote side without waiting for green tick on the index page that tells you your new up load has been saved.

Filezilla, imageshack, and photobucket are free.

Ready man!

I solved the problem! Cheesy Cheesy  cool cool  grin grin

Thaxs..

After it processes the request..What should I do?

Wait...

When they get your domain hosted, your page will load as whatever you have uploaded into your t35 ftp.

For instance, www.geauxwebdesigns.com is hosted by t35.  The t35 domain is terceslil.t35.com

Soooo, I had uploaded the website to terceslil.t35.com and then when they completed my request to host geauxwebdesigns.com, all the pages that I uploaded to terceslil.t35.com pop up when I type www.geauxwebdesigns.com into my browser.

just that easy

Ahhh... I had to change my DNS settings back to default, then change my MX settings, then change my DNS settings back to t35's settings.  The email is now set up, but now working.  Will update you tomorrow about whether or not the email will work.  AOL says that it may take 12 to 24 hours to receive email when you BYOD.

Thanks

As I stated before, the registrar (register.com) referred me to the host for the domain...
14  T35 Hosting Support / Free Hosting Domain Support / Is it possible to BYOD to AOL's email or Office Live (beta)? on: February 20, 2008, 12:28:57 PM
I am the webmaster for womenplayfootball.com and would like email for womenplayfootball.com.  I have found a couple of services that provide free email for your domain, so I assume AOL or Office Live (Beta) hosts the email for your domain.

I have sent an email t35's webmaster for the MX record to  be changed as instructed by AOL's BYOD instructions.  Actually, AOL instructed me to contact the registrar for the domain, which is register.com.  I contacted register.com and they said that they are not hosting the domain, and to contact the host, which is t35.com.

Please let me know if my request for the MX record to be changed will be able to be processed.  And if it is, I am providing the link for AOL so that others who have their own domains hosted by t35 can also get email for their domain.  Also, please let me know how long it will take to process this request.

I found out about AOL's BYOD here: https://domains.aol.com/personaldomain/app/domainMainSearch

Hopefully I this will work.  I will be really grateful if it does.  Please let me know if I did not forward the email to the appropriate person for my request to be processed.
