I've used SMF, YaBB, phpBB, and others. SMF I still liked the best. However, YaBB is a very close second. I've figured out how to recode YaBB to give me the titles I want for the Topic title icons. At the time I had SMF, I was still learning how to program, so can't tell you how easy it is to alter going into the code. However, SMF had the best boards and subforums arrangement. Which is basically the number one reason I'm switching back to SMF.
2  T35 Hosting Support / Paid Hosting cPanel & Fantastico Support / Re: cPanel request concerning utf-8 website on: March 22, 2008, 10:36:22 PM
Whats funny is that I wasn't having that problem until this week or late last week.

Uploading them using ftp shouldn't make a difference. When I open it up inside of cPanel, I'll still get the same problem.
If I were to stop making so many encoding errors, I could work offline and be done with it.  rolleyes The problem is in cPanel's encoding. It does not  recognize that the uploaded notepad file was saved as a utf-8 file previously, when I go to open up the file inside of cPanel to edit the errors I've found. The foreign language words to show up correctly on the public webpage. Its just the behind the scenes that is the current issue. I'm guessing, that I won't have issues with the blogging because the website shows up properly otherwise.  grin

What I did was look at other people code and learned HTML the hard way. I tried using templates but when I put in my pictures and other content, the template broke and the page looked scrambled.

Here's a link to some freeware html editors that you might find useful.

--> Just stay away from alpha and beta versions as you really do not need those. They haven't gotten the bugs worked out yet.
--> Also, search engines don't really use meta-tags anymore, so don't bother loading your meta-tags with key words. However, you will still need the meta-tags for browsers. Its better to have a really good and long title for your page.

The best place to validate code is at www.w3.org. You can get a complete output that tells you where the errors are. They also have free tutorials.
After April 10th, I hope to have more time so I can help people with their HTML where I actually know the answer.

Best Wishes!
4  T35 Hosting Support / Paid Hosting cPanel & Fantastico Support / cPanel request concerning utf-8 website on: March 22, 2008, 01:55:35 AM
Is it possible for cPanel to change their code so that it either 1) reads the mega tag line that says the page is in utf-8
or
2) Remembers how you opened the file the last time so that it will automatically open as a utf-8 file everytime instead of insisting on me scrolling down to utf-8?

I have tried reuploading the files after saving them as utf-8 files in notepad, but that did nothing. Only my index file does cPanel give me the utf-8 choice as a default. Its rather annoying. However, eventually, I will have blogs on my site using wordpress. I will have users typing in various languages. Will cPanel automatically save the file as a utf-8 file? Ideally, my entire site will be automatically utf-8. Those who refuse to upgrade to 2008 can go elsewhere as I want my site to be multilingual and global instead of stuck in the mud. LOL
5  T35 Hosting Support / Paid Hosting cPanel & Fantastico Support / Re: TMP folder is way to big. What can I safely delete? on: March 22, 2008, 01:49:15 AM
I deleted the entire folders by hand. Webalizer and Awstats were taking up 70% of my website space. I completely deleted their folders and solved the problem. I forget which one was the worst, but one of them was extremely worse then that other.
The problem is that they do detailed analysis and report it on a daily basis. If you do not configure it right so that if gives you only a lite reporting, it will bloat your site.

Unfortunately, I forgot to bookmark this request and so did not remember to come back here. Sorry about the delay in posting.
Thanks! Bye! Case closed on my end.
6  T35 Hosting Support / Paid Hosting cPanel & Fantastico Support / TMP folder is way to big. What can I safely delete? on: January 29, 2008, 09:44:41 PM
I only need help with the following folders and file. I do not know what I can safely delete. I've figured out the other files and deleted many of them.

Can "tpgames.net-bytes_log" be deleted with cPanel making a new log file? Can I delete any of the contents inside this file?

webalizer folder: Can "dns_cache.db" be deleted without messing up anything? Will cPanel create a new one automatically?
Thanks!  grin

One free forum hosting site disabled guest posting as it was causing havoc with the servers. Spammers come in with their robot posting code and group post lots of messages and bring the servers down with their load impact. Other crackers go in find the loop hole to take over the forum and then bring the server down.

Making one register gives you a better chance of getting an IP address to ban crackers with.  grin

Usually, one just uploads the pages to their site. It all depends on who's hosting the site. If you are at yourname.t35.com, then you would use ftp to upload the pages to that site.

Personally, I find buying a personal hosting from t35.com very inexpensive and very worth it. One gets to use cPanel to upload stuff to their site. It does mean buying a domain name. That is usually around $10 a year or less depending on who you go with.

I just found a site that has some good solid data on page rankings.
pagerank-checker-tool

If you scroll half way down the page, you will see the post "the fundamental understanding of Google..."

I'll stop posting to this topic now.  grin

YES! My .com and .net site is a whooping 2 and 1! Exactly what I want for those sites. Obviously, I won't want that for my sister's site. But, that will come.  grin

Hmm.. strange. looking into it.
grin It sounds like when the forum's permissions was set up for users, the box that allows thread starters too edit all posts got checked. I used to have a SMF forum a long time ago. They had so many cool features. I thought that box did exist.  rolleyes  shocked Oops.  grin
14  General / General and Business Discussion / Re: Save the forums! on: January 09, 2008, 02:09:31 PM
grin I'm fine with whatever is decided. I just don't want to be apart of the competition on my current websites. It's easier for me to keep my stuff status quo due to my disability. However, my sister's site would gladly use the benefit of a contest, when I get it up in the next couple months.

However, I did find out about one trick that people use. They join other forums that are like minded and have a link in their signature to their own forum.
