If you have no programming background, it is best for you to buy a book like "OReilly Programming PHP". This book covers the basics, including String, Functions and the like. It also covers XML, and GD libary, as well as PDF's. A great book.

Its mostly for beginner however, as I said. People who havn't had a programming background.
