Eh, this ones got me stumped. Never in my years came across needing something named writing permission...

Do we have this on the free host?

this is in reference to a blog I am installing. says this:

requires only PHP
All data is stored in flat text files, so no database software is required. All you need is PHP 4.1 and appropriate write permissions on your server.

Yes. They are talking about chmod (which you can do via ftp only). Those are the permissions. so yes your blog should work.

hmm I tried it and it said unable to write to file.

Maybe I configured it wrong... Will try again later. Right now I am updating my computer. I cleaned it completely lastnight, it's like a new computer again.

I have also same problem. PHP script should be able to write (and update) small cache files, but that's not the case. I did set all directories in the path and files to 777, but it's still unable to update files (or write new ones if one doesn't exist). Btw, at home same system on apache server works like charm.
