Is interlinking a good optimization technique? When link building, should i put links out there that go to internal pages of my website or should I just link to the main page and hope that visitors will go to the rest themselves?

Any thought!!

There are two reasons for internal links: reference and pageviews. Reference is a great reason for internal linking: new readers appreciate the fact that, when faced with shorthand descriptions like “it’s a better version of Wallop“, they can click the link to see what “Wallop” is referring to. Certainly as a new blogger a few years ago, I found this to be a useful way to build on top of my existing knowledge and essentially map out my brain through links. But then blogging went commercial and bloggers saw a pleasant side-effect of internal linking: increased pageviews. This “brain map” generates more pageviews than outbound linking, and thus our competitors followed suit. In fact, the only way to gain a competitive advantage was to do it even more than us; so you end up with a situation where some blogs begin to make 47% of their links internal, and frequently the only link in the post is to an internal page, not to the site being discussed.

Internal linking is a good practice, if you have a site about mugs and have a home page , one about coffee mugs, another about tea cups, another about designer mugs etc  By having links pointing at internal pages, its telling the search engines 1. other sites are saying this is a good site because we are linking to them and 2. the site is about coffee mugs, or tea mugs etc.  This starts to tell the search engines that your site is more of an authority on all types of mugs and generate more entry points to your site from traffic coming in to inner pages, as opposed to just the home page. Its also seen by the search engines as a more natural way of linking, which you want.
