For a person who starts a new website and has it up and running, what else needs to be done? Are there - like - three or four basic steps that a person needs to take beyond just hitting "publish"?

I would:

1) Submit to many free directories. Check this out http://freewebsubmission.com/
2) Make sure your site is optimized correctly.  Check out some SEO tips
3) Make sure your site loads quickly.  Optimize pictures and use css efficiently
4) Make sure your site is compatible and looks the same in all common browsers

1st get some links pointing to tell google your site has come & it should index.
Then do seo and have content.
get a good alexa rank using tricks. bellow 1million
then build links by directory submission..forum signatures

You then do well in search engines...

Hi,

I'm a small-sized business owner with what I believed to be a hot product and service opportunity. I was excited when I finally got my web page up to advertise what I had to offer. After a few months of very little traffic, I realized I was missing something. I enlisted the help of CastleWave who specializes in search engine optimization. Through their efforts and focusing on link building within my own site, my page rank quickly began to rise and I immediately noticed an increase in traffic, leading to an increase in sales. I learned that a web page is only a web page until you optimize it.

Hope it will be helpful for you!!!

0. be sure to have seo-ed website. Unique titles, meta descriptions, H tags, lots of unique content

1. go over to info.vilesilencer.com and subit your website to free directories. Make sure you use different anchors and descriptions !

2. without investment there is no real success in 99% cases. So go out and buy some related links

3. update your website on regular basis !

4. Use stumbleupon and other social bookmarking services for instant traffic !
