I understand, generally, SEO. Still, I'm not confident that I'm really using it as effectively as I could be. There's just something about my approach that I'm thinking may be lacking.

Are there any "finer points" when it comes to keywords? Is there something beyond just using the few individual words and then those same words in a phrase?

In terms of tags, is more always better? How many keywords, on average, does anything new?

It would be easier if you gave us your site you are trying to optimize.  Off the top of my head you should concentrate on a good page title, correct meta tags, alt tags for images, using h1 tags, have a google sitemap. If you are unfamiliar with any of these, google it and you can find lots of info.

As far as keyword density, just concentrate on being readable to your visitors, yet still be descriptive and keep in mind your targeted keywords.  Do that and you will be fine.

This is good point about being readable. If you look at those Myspace Sites where you get glitters layouts etc.  The fill the front page with a bunch of garble stuffed with keywords and repeat myspace layouts.

As you can see, this is obvious its just keyword stuffing in the sentance.
Alot of those sites do this!
This does help in SEO but doesn't really make alot of sense.

1st links to your sites using keywords targeted as anchor text would boost your serps & rest part is meta tag n titles full of keywords...then content should have good density of keywords...but them appearing once would do.
