one seo technique to gain more backlinks is through joining forums, but i heard and read with some forums that it was not helpful anymore..

I don't think that it is not helpful anymore. Maybe it's importance is lessened a bit. Anyway it's not just backlinks we are aiming in posting forums, it's also one way to promote our site to make it more visible.

Yeah you can got the back links by joining the forum where the user can exchange his/her knowledge. The forum signatures are the main source of the backlinks.

Building backlinks is a part of off-site seo. Helps trememndously in building up your links for specific keywords. Having these backlinks on the index page of a high PR site can be very useful.

A forum signature will not be useful for SEO purpose if its uses the nofollow attribute on its links.
