i didn't find a topic like this here, so let's start one

which bulletin board do you prefer?
some years ago i startet with an phpbb
but it sucked very much because of the updates & ssecurity holes
then i switched to an german software http://www.thwboard.de/
this was great but they stoped supporting and developing it, so i had to search something else
then i find vbulletin.
since then i'm a happy customer
this software is great

I use phpbb for my forums.  I had to spend a good week installing security codes to stop all the spam and autobots, but after I got that done, I am very happy with it.  The only problem is most people are familiar with vbulletin, and phpbb is a bit different.  If I had the money I would 100% go with vbulletin.

Phpbb is one of the best free forum software around. It has good support, mods, skins and easy to use cpanel for admins.
I have used phpbb a lot and like the extensibility and it security as well.

IPB is the best if you are looking for a paid forum. It has the best default mods and provides amazing support.

Free software it has to be SMF. Its fast, secure and user friendly. Mods can be a pain for non standard themes but other than that its great.

Paid software it has to be vB. Love the 'hooks' with that software...

I have to agree with everyone before me. As an avid forum user i prefer nvision and phpbb. Both are easily customizable and there is more than enough support and tutorials to figure it out!

I'm an in experinced forum admin, I just started my first one 2 moths ago, I used yabb.

Few of the pros, Feature filled, easily navigated, easy to set up though cpanel, easy admin center, easy to mod. great and fast support team/forum.

Cons, little slow, inexperienced users (the ones that call their monitor, "their computer") have a little hard time with it's features.

Very few complaints on it so far.
Main one is that it is a little slow
But there are lots of mods and skins for it.
Everyone loves the skins. The themes are stolen and used for other sites all the time.

For free one, I don't regret it at all.

If I could afford it, I'd switch to VBulletin in a heart beat though.

I'm also a mod on a phpbb site, and personally, I don't like it.
It is faster, than yabb, (don't take much) but from a user stand point, yabb is closer to Vbulletin and the guy I'm mod for, has me doing alot of the admin and making any changes, mods or updates... so pretty much admin......  yabb is 10 times easier to navigate on server side, the file structure is much simpler. As matter of fact that forum has been down for a month and we can't figure out what is wrong with it.

I can reload yabb from scratch and have it fully restored in 15 mins if it crashes.

I used Vbulletin for about a year, I was a moderator of a large webmaster board and have become accustomed to the easy options that Vbulletin has. If you are going or have money to spend I would highly recommend that you put it to good use with a Vbulletin software.

There are other software options to use on a board, Try SMF. I have used smf for about 6 months and its really a simple piece of software to use. The community they have is very helpful and there are tons of mods offered in the community to use on your board.

So if its paid software you are looking at try Vbulletin. If you are tight on a budget or want to use your money for something else, try SMF you won't be sorry.

I've used SMF, YaBB, phpBB, and others. SMF I still liked the best. However, YaBB is a very close second. I've figured out how to recode YaBB to give me the titles I want for the Topic title icons. At the time I had SMF, I was still learning how to program, so can't tell you how easy it is to alter going into the code. However, SMF had the best boards and subforums arrangement. Which is basically the number one reason I'm switching back to SMF.

For me there are only two forum scripts worth looking up

Paid : vbulletin
Free : punbb

When I setup forum I first use punbb and when it gets big I buy vbulletin.

Check punbb.org - You would be surprised how fast a forum can be !

I'm starting to get into SMF, though I think am more inclined to Vbulletin all time round though I've never used it. I think it's for the simple fact, that you can do so much with it and it offers so many features and there isn't clashes with the sofware as there is a few on SMF I have found out.
