For your personal statistics id recomend google analytics. Very comprehensive!
For a hit counter on on the site like numbers increasing id say avoid it. they look naff and are pointless! cool

Google it! There are loads of free hit counters out there that are easy as a click of a button. I kno freewebs, and bravenet offerered them before, the goal is to find one that does not have an advertisment inside of it.
good luck!

Check statcounter.com

This is a free hit counter that can be visible or invisible on your site.  Plus you can use it on websites and blogs.  This is a Free Webtool was recommended to me by a friend. They said it works nicely.  Hope this helps.

I agree that a hit counter should be avoided  I suggest using site-visit statistics.
Try: http://www.sitemeter.com/

I agree. I would avoid using a hits counter that is visible to your visitors. You would be much better off with having and keeping that information for yourself in my opinion.
