I am using Dreamweaver MX (I know pretty old) to do my web design projects. When I select Make document compliant it adds these two tags

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="iso-8859-1"?>

At the beginning and

<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1" />

after the title tag

My question is whether this tag is necessary and what exactly does it do? Thanks in Advance

Not exactly sure what it does, but I searched it in Google (btw, this page was third) and found it on from another forum and here's the link: http://www.killersites.com/mvnforum/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=1284. From what I read, I think it's mandatory for xhtml but not for html, but go check it out and read it yourself to see exactly.

to be honest, i dont know why it's there but dream weaver adds it automatically when a new page is created and most every internet page uses it.
