I finally got around to making a post about our new change in ads from pop-ups to footer text links. Since we've had pop-ups for almost 7 years, I thought it was only fair to give a little more background on the decision. You can check out the post here: Pop-up Ads removed from T35 Hosting member pages!

The trend of the dying pop up has been going on for a few years now, but the marketers just didn't want to listen. I am happy to see the pop up die before the banner. I didn't know which would begin the death rattle first. I hear a lot about people jumping to audio and video advertising as a way to get in your face without permission once again. I can't be too mad at them. Now we just need a TiVo for our You Tube.

LOL at the "tivo for youtube" comment.

The popup has long died on any genuine website. The only sites I still see them on are annoying websites like game or lyric sites. Popups have been dead for quite some time, but the publishers would not hear it until all their users simply packed up and left.

What was the final kill to popup marketing? IE having a built in blocker. That hit the nail on the head and killed it once and for all.

Most of the newer pop-ups get around the IE/Firefox block (and Firefox was the first to have that btw). The pop-up ads we were serving loaded as layered ads when blocked and had a 98% success rate.

pop-up ads are not affective anyway. there are still pop-under ads and corner ads and other such ads. I hate those flash ads because I cant block them with firefox.

most ads i just right click in firefox and say block but how do you blog those flash ads.

The one's T35 had were not technically pop ups. They didn't open in a new windows, therefore they were not blocked in Firefox.

Pop ups are terrible. I have seen some pop ups that don't let you view an article or go onto the site without filling in information. Must make for a crazy bounceback rating.

I love going onto a site at work only to have my speakers blasting with some advertisement and everyone looking my way.

Seriously, its almost like infringement of privacy.

Next thing you know they will automatically open your webcam and threaten to blackmail you with the pic if you dont fill out info/buy their product.

Almost as bad as Scareware, the Anti Viruses that install themselves, and are actually the viruses.

Pop up windows come in many different shapes and sizes, typically in a scaled-down browser window with only the Close, Minimize and Maximize commands.

There is a strong resentment by some Web surfers towards pop-up ads. Marketers often do not realize the ill-will generated by pop-ups because it is easier to click the "close" button than send an email to complain. What can often be seen is an above-average click-through rate, although some of this can come from "false positives," unintentional clicks when the pop-up gets in the way of the desired target. Advertisers can get a better picture of the effectiveness of pop-up advertising by paying attention to conversion rates and return on investment (ROI).

Popup ads are just plain annoying. It would bother me if the concept had never been invented.
