Virtual private server
« on: May 04, 2011, 04:58:42 AM »
If you are an online business owner like me and follow the contents of this forum regularly then you must have an idea about secured web hosting platforms.  Needless to say, the complexities of the Internet is increasing with time and running an online business is not as simple as it used to be earlier.  As a business owner you need to pick the most suitable web hosting solution. From my experience I would say that choosing a web hosting service provider that offers a robust Virtual Private server app is the best decision you can take.

Virtual private server (VPS) is a marketing term used by Internet hosting services to refer to a virtual machine for use exclusively by an individual customer of the service. The term is used to emphasize that the virtual machine, although running in software on the same physical computer as other customers' virtual machines, is functionally equivalent to a separate physical computer, is dedicated to the individual customer's needs, has the privacy of a separate physical computer, and can be configured to run as a server computer (i.e. to run server software). The term Virtual Dedicated Server or VDS is used less often for the same concept.

Linux virtual private server
I have seen a lot of people shying away from Linux because they think it is not as user friendly as windows. However, the ground reality is that more and more people are choosing the Linux virtual server model for their web hosting needs.  The main reasons for this are the flexibility and rock solid security that you can get from Linux kernel. In the long run it also turns out to be more cost effective than other VPS solutions.

Linux Virtual Server (LVS) is an advanced load balancing solution for Linux systems. It is an open source project started by Wensong Zhang in May 1998. The mission of the project is to build a high-performance and highly available server for Linux using clustering technology, which provides good scalability, reliability and serviceability.

The major work of the LVS project is now to develop advanced IP load balancing software (IPVS), application-level load balancing software (KTCPVS), and cluster management components.

    * IPVS: is an advanced IP load balancing software implemented inside the Linux kernel. The IP Virtual Server code was already included into the standard Linux kernel 2.4 and 2.6.
    * KTCPVS: implements application-level load balancing inside the Linux kernel, currently under development.

Thanks,

If you are planning to start an e commerce business and want to stay in the business for long then you will require a stable server for managing and running  your site.  I can tell you from my experience that you cannot go wrong with a Linux dedicated server. Linux is no longer the geek friendly OS devoid of a nice GUI! A lot of people choose the Apache server. What you get from this platform is flexibility and enhanced security.

virtual private server is a good choice for small and medium businesses that need a custom configuration. VPS plans are ideal for those who can not afford the cost of a dedicated server but require almost same dedicated level of flexibility, at a reduced cost.

The physical server typically runs a hypervisor which is tasked with creating, releasing, and managing the resources of "guest" operating systems, or virtual machines. These guest operating systems are allocated a share of resources of the physical server, typically in a manner in which the guest is not aware of any other physical resources save for those allocated to it by the hypervisor.

The Guest system may be fully virtualized, paravirtualized, or a hybrid of the two.

In a fully virtualized environment, the guest is presented with an emulated or virtualized set of hardware and is unaware that this hardware is not strictly physical. The hypervisor in this case must translate, map, and convert requests from the guest system into the appropriate resource requests on the host, resulting in significant overhead. Almost all systems can be virtualized using this method, as it requires no modification of the operating system, however a CPU supporting virtualization is required for most hypervisors that perform full virtualization.

A Virtual private server or virtual dedicated server is the technique to offer one of the methods of partitioning a server computer so as in can be made available to multiple users. That way, each server would have the façade as well as the capabilities of being able to run on its own on a dedicated computer or machine. With every vps hosting, there would be a developed operating system, which could independently run as well as reboot each server.

Virtual private server is a term used by Internet hosting services to refer to a virtual machine. Virtual dedicated server or VDS is used less often for the same concept, however it may indicate that the server does not use burst/shared ram through multiple machines, as well as individual CPU cores.

Well, choosing a virtual private server solution doesn't mean that you website data is completely secured. It depends on the web hosting provider and its security practices. If the hosting provider is well knowledgeable and has an experienced technical team who knows how to secure the servers, then definitely your data would be safe. But, if the server is not secured properly, then though you are on a dedicated server still your data would be on risk.

Always choose a service provider who offers secured server solutions and has redundancy to offer.

If it's Linux then you have to learn the Linux command line interface. You use a program called Putty to connect to your Linux virtual private server. If it's Windows, then you use your Remote Desktop Client to remote control the server, and then you have to learn how IIS works.
